Mulled Wine Cocktail Recipe

September 3, 2023

The Thistle’s take on a time-honored festive delight, this drink is a hug in a mug for those chilly autumn and winter nights.

Originating from ancient Rome, people would spice and warm their wines to combat the biting winter cold. Over centuries, this heated wine has embraced an array of flavors from ginger and pepper to cardamom and select herbs. Our tried-and-true formula mingles red wine with classic warm spices and a dash of brandy, crafting an inviting holiday potion for all (and if it’s just for you, cheers – we won’t tell!).

What exactly is mulled wine?

Simply put, mulled wine is red wine that’s been gently simmered with a medley of heartwarming spices. To whip up this delightful concoction, mix a bottle of red with orange slices, choice spices, honey, and brandy. Give it a gentle simmer for 10 minutes, and there you have it! In under half an hour, you’ll be cradling winter’s coziest beverage.

What’s the best wine for mulled wine?

While we have a soft spot for drier reds like Merlot, Malbec, or Cabernet Sauvignon, it truly boils down to your personal taste. Pick a bottle you adore, and it’s bound to shine.

Ingredients

  • 1 (750-ml.) bottle red wine
  • 1 orange, sliced into rounds, plus more for garnish
  • 6 whole cloves
  • 3 cinnamon sticks, plus more for garnish
  • 3 star anise
  • 1/4 c. honey
  • 1/2 c. brandy

Is brandy a must?

Absolutely not! While brandy does add a certain richness, feel free to omit it. The medley of other ingredients will ensure your mulled wine is still bursting with flavor.

Craving something a tad cooler? Give our red wine sangria or red wine mules a go.
